About Sheryl
I am an artist, photographer and believer in the power of love, more concerned with finding the beauty, magic and the sacred in each other and the world, than dwelling over the mistakes, crimes and the damage we humans have done and continue to. I try to take responsibility for doing what I can to stop the cycle of hate at my doorstep. By practicing gratitude, kindness and tolerance of an imperfect world and those we love, then maybe we can live an authentic life... we can have peace when we learn to forgive, especially ourselves....
For me photographing images is like instant gratification because the image is there, captured, as it really is at that time. But painting is my passion because it is ever changing throughout the creative process. I may use one or several photo images to create the emotion, texture and shapes I want in the painting. Then the painting becomes what it is apart from the photos.
I have tended to pay special attention to nature subjects where the sunlight has made extreme contrasts. I am now moving more toward a human subject with themes dealing with the many shades of Love. The way in which I deal with colour comes from my 27 years of working in the photofinishing industry where Ive noticed that film sees sunlight as red/orange and shadows as blue/green. There is colour in every shade of gray. Attention to the brushstroke comes from my love affair with artists such as the Tom Thompson, Emily Carr, Vincent VanGogh and Paul Gauguin.
